When Keyshia Cole released her debut studio album, The Way It Is 20 years ago, she was releasing next to pumped-up club music dominated by male artists like Usher and Chris Brown. But Cole was focused on bringing back the soul of R&B with her heartbreak and emotional themes, so she knew she had the chance to make meaningful music for people who are experiencing the same. Her authenticity and relatability among young women secured her rise to popularity, and the album seemed to have a permanent post on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for eighty-four weeks. Now, she’s ready to bring it back after two decades. Cole says she’s “really excited about being able to give fans that nostalgic moment.” and promises the audience of her upcoming tour that “We’re going to have a great time.”
Cole has been a fan of music from a very early age, and her natural talent did not go unnoticed. Rap superstar MC Hammer saw her potential right away after she recorded background vocals for him. Music icon Tupac Shakur, who also happens to be a close friend of hers, also asked her to songwrite for him shortly before his untimely death. In 2005, when she released her album The Way It Is, her three platinum singles, I Changed My Mind, Love, and I Should Have Cheated, quickly made her popular, especially among the female audience. Since then, she has released six more albums. Recently, she announced that her eighth album is on the way, and fans are beyond excited.
The R&B star shares that her upcoming tour will make her goal of having “the theatrics of my show tell a story like a movie or a play”. Make sure to be there when Cole makes it come to life right here at Toyota Oakdale Theatre. The venue is well-equipped with excellent sound systems that provide great acoustics for concerts, and frequent concertgoers have preferred this venue for its accessible and affordable seating options.
